Easy Steps to Curl Definition at Home
Easy Steps to Curl Definition at Home
Have you ever wondered how those hair gurus obtain those drool-worthy curls? Not the ones that were done by using curling irons or perm rods, but the natural kinky curls that look perfectly defined, healthy, and bouncy? Well, you’re in luck, sis. Believe it or not, it’s easier than you think to get quality curl definition from the comfort of your home. All you have to do is follow these three easy steps below.
Step 1 for Quality Curl Definition at Home: Cleanse and clarify your hair with care.
Now, I understand that sometimes it’s easy to just throw your head in the sink, wash your hair, then go on about your business for your haircare routine. If you want to maximize the potential for your curls to be defined, you’re actually better off washing your hair in the shower. Why? When you wash your hair in the shower, it’s easier for you to keep your tresses in a downward motion, which will eliminate potential frizz. One thing you’ll learn about maintaining your curl definition is that you want to manipulate your curls as little as possible. Excess manipulation causes frizz, and we don’t want that when we’re trying to keep our curls defined.
When selecting a shampoo, use one that’s moisturizing and lightweight like the Shedavi Crowned Moisturizing Shampoo. Another secret to having well-defined curls is moisture, and we’ll get to that in a bit.
Step 2 for Quality Curl Definition at Home: Condition and Moisturize
Like all things natural, moisture is the key to success. Taking the time to have your tresses good and moisturized will help defining your curls that much easier. Now, while using a deep conditioner is a great, soothing idea, you have to also be sure to use a leave-in conditioner. Even if you deep condition your hair for hours, you still have to wash it out eventually. Using a lightweight leave-in conditioner, you can make sure your hair has all the nutrients it needs to have that shine and bounce. If you have time to do both a deep conditioner and a leave-in, do it. If not, you should, at minimum, use the leave-in. The more moisturized your hair is, the longer the curls will last. Step 3 for Quality Curl Definition at Home: Separate tresses and apply your product.
Here’s another secret to achieving quality curl definition: you have to make sure you put enough product on all your tresses. Think about back in the day when you got a perm and a spot was accidentally missed, leaving a portion of your hair not as straight as the rest. That’s what can happen to your curls if the hair is improperly sectioned and does not have enough product. You’ll have some spots looking good and others a frizzy mess.
That means that it’s not enough to just separate your hair into four sections and glob it on. You must be deliberate and gentle when applying product to your hair. So, how is it done? Evenly coat smaller sections of your damp hair with your curl enhancing product, like 'a wash and go gel. Make sure your hair is damp because it will take the product much better than if it’s dry.
Once you’re done, leave it alone. I repeat, LEAVE YOUR HAIR ALONE. Don’t start running your fingers through your hair and playing with your curls. Remember what I said earlier--the less you manipulate your hair while it’s in a fragile state, the more defined your curls will be. Allow your hair to air dry and voila! You got yourself a head full of defined curls from the comfort of your home.
